SUMMARY:High minority power facilitates democratization across ethnic fault
  lines
DESCRIPTION:The historical record knows only few instances of democracies w
aging war against each other. Therefore\, democratization is considered ke
y in achieving global peace. However\, efforts to achieve sustained democr
atic governance often fail—Afghanistan being a recent example. Democrati
zation appears particularly challenging where grievances between ethnic gr
oups can spill over into democratic institutions and obstruct the negotiat
ion of mutually beneficial compromises. So far\, research on democratizati
on vis-à-vis preexisting ethnic conflicthas relied on correlational evide
nce and historical case studies\, making it hard to establish causality. H
ere\, we complement previous work with an economic lab-in-the-field experi
ment modeling a situation in which unequal groups with ongoing ethnic tens
ions can solve a joint allocation problem either democratically or aggress
ively. We find that\, as theoretically predicted\, minority groups are muc
h more likely to opt for inefficient aggression\, but also that equipping
minorities with high power under the democratic allocation procedure subst
antiallyreduces this problem. Removing ethnic hostility subtly shifts part
icipants’ beliefs but does not reduce aggressive behavior. Thus\, our re
sults demonstrate that well-designed democratic institutions can achieve e
fficient\, peaceful outcomes even when intergroup hostility is prevalent.
However\, we also see that their success vitally depends on their inclusiv
ity towards the interests of minority groups.\\r\\nTime and Place: Tuesday

SUMMARY:Presentation: POST-REPRESENTATIONAL CARTOGRAPHY - Exploring The Ro
le of Emergent Cartographic Practices In Decolonization And (Re) Establish
 ing Socio-Spatial Justice
DESCRIPTION:This research explores how traditional Western maps have shaped
power and inequality in postcolonial Coastal Kenya. It shows that these m
apping practices—often seen as neutral or technical—have actually play
ed a role in continuing colonial legacies by ignoring or erasing Indigenou
s ways of understanding space and place. For many local communities\, this
has meant being left out of decisions that affect their land\, culture\,
and future. The study offers a new way of thinking about maps—not just a
s tools for showing where things are\, but as powerful social and politica
l practices. It introduces cartography as something relational and active:
a process of working together to create shared understandings of space th
at reflect lived experiences\, cultural knowledge\, and community values.
This perspective is grounded in a decolonial approach that challenges the
dominance of state-driven\, top-down forms of mapping. Working with commun
ities in Mida Creek\, Kisiwani Island\, and Lamu\, the research uses creat
ive and participatory methods such as counter-mapping\, storytelling\, sou
nd-based mapping\, drawing on the ground\, and art-based workshops. These
methods centre local voices and knowledges—oral\, sensory\, embodied—t
hat are often dismissed by official mapping systems. Together\, these acti
vities help communities reclaim their spatial identities and imagine new f
utures. This research contributes by offering a critical reconceptualizati
on of cartography as a relational\, performative\, and decolonial practice
. It shows how alternative mapping can be a powerful tool for justice\, so
lidarity\, and healing—helping people resist historical erasure\, share
knowledge\, and shape more inclusive and equitable ways of living and gove
 rning space.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Mangrove Ecologies presents Radio Mikoko+
DESCRIPTION:Mangrove Ecologies is an interdisciplinary exhibition that expl
ores mangroves as both fascinating biotopes and living metaphors. Bringing
  together artists\, scientists\, craftspeople\, designers\, and technologi
sts\, the project investigates how the complex intelligence of ecological
systems can guide more reciprocal\, rhizomatic and interconnected ways of
living — shaping a planetary diplomacy. At the core of the exhibition is
Radio Mikoko+ ("mikoko" meaning mangroves in Kiswahili)\, a multisensory
installation developed over nine months (August 2024 – June 2025) by art
ists David Muiruri (KE)\, Joseph Kamaru (KE)\, Ann Mbuti (CH/GER)\, and Ya
ssine Rachidi (CH/MAR). Drawing on storytelling\, field recordings\, mater
ial experimentation\, and cartographic research\, the work leads visitors
on a sonic and sensory journey from Lamu Island to Basel\, tracing tides o
f memory\, relation\, and cultural exchange. The project draws conceptual
inspiration from Édouard Glissant’s poetics of relation\, envisioning m
angroves as a metaphor for entangled\, non-hierarchical systems of knowled
ge and belonging. Just as mangrove roots intertwine across borders of land
and sea\, Mangrove Ecologies explores how distant geographies\, such as a
 n ancient Swahili island town\, Lamu\, and a historic Swiss city\, Basel\,
can be connected through shared experiences\, stories\, ecologies\, and p
ractices of care. Initiated by kuchanua\, Planisphere\, and the Lamu Youth
Alliance\, the project embodies a unique collaboration between Switzerlan
d and Kenya. It asks what it means for a landlocked country to listen to m
arine environments\, and how knowledge rooted in local ecosystems can reso
nate across continents. The exhibition is the culmination of extensive res
earch conducted on Lamu Island\, a place shaped by centuries of cultural m
ovement and encounter. Here\, the idea of “elsewhereness” emerges\, no
t as disclocation or signifer for exoticism\, but as a layered sense of be
longing that transcends fixed boundaries. Visitors are invited to step int
o the humid embrace of the Viktoriahaus at the Botanical Garden\, where th
e installation activates the senses through the moisture of the air\, glim
pses of mangrove creatures\, and layered soundscapes from Lamu that echo t
he ebb and flow of the tides. Mangrove Ecologies is supported by Pro Helve
tia and Swisslos\, in collaboration with the University of Basel\, EPFL+EC

SUMMARY:Workshop: Theorizing the Ambivalences of Care
DESCRIPTION:This interdisciplinary workshop seeks to grapple with the compl
ex\, often contradictory dimensions of care by attending to the tensions b
etween affirmation and subjugation embedded in contemporary caregiving ins
titutions. Focusing on spaces where care intersects with control—such as
safehouses for victims of human trafficking\, violence prevention program

vers and care receivers navigate and make sense of the power dynamics impl
icated in care relationships shaped by structural forms of abuse and negle
 ct rooted in white supremacy\, capitalist dispossession\, exploitation\, a
nd cisheteropatriarchy. By interrogating how concepts like safety\, securi
 ty\, protection\, support\, and well-being are navigated\, imposed\, and r
eshaped within these environments\, the workshop will probe methodological
and theoretical questions about how to move beyond the prevailing notion
—shared by both post-Foucauldian thinkers and feminist philosophers of c
are—that care is dual\, simultaneously sustaining and confining lives. D
rawing from marginalized traditions of thought such as critical disability
and childhood studies\, as well as Black feminist and queer/trans perspec
tives on care work\, it will center the creative strategies of those caugh
t within these institutions. The workshop will ask how individuals reshape
 \, refuse\, and re-signify their positions\, transforming both themselves
and the structures through which care is mediated.\\r\\nThrough this lens\

s and limits of current frameworks for a feminist ethics and politics of c
are\, as well as how to enrich and nuance our understanding of the entangl

those whose support is structurally intertwined with domination. This one-
day workshop will be structured around feedback sessions on first drafts s
ubmitted by scholars whose work critically engages with the ambivalences o
f care\, alongside collective readings of key texts by authors who have th
oughtfully and innovatively explored these themes. Participants are invite

SUMMARY:13th Bernoulli Lecture by Andrew Oswald
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will cautiously disagree with four ideas that west
ern society tends to take for granted: (I) Economic growth remains a desir
able objective. (II) Increasing temperatures are leading to the rising num
bers of natural disasters that we observe. (III) Most human beings care ab
out climate change. (IV) The best way forward on climate-change would be t
o adopt economists' solutions on carbon pricing\, etc.\\r\\nThe lecture wi
ll describe evidence inconsistent with these four ideas. It will then try
to suggest where we go from here. Time will be left at the end of the lect
ure for open discussion.\\r\\nAndrew Oswald is a professor of economics an

n the board of reviewing editors of the journal Science\, is chair of the
network advisory panel of the IZA Institute in Bonn in Germany\, and holds
an honorary senior appointment at the wellbeing research centre in Oxford
. His work has spanned economics\, psychology\, epidemiology\, public heal

SUMMARY:Freedom\, Autonomy and Intimate Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Intimate relationships are an area of our moral lives that has
been receiving increasing attention in the analytic philosophical traditio
 n. In this workshop\, we will draw on contemporary moral philosophy\, focu

nd to cover a range of topics in moral\, legal\, and political philosophy.
We will address questions such as (but not limited to): What moral duties
arise from intimate relationships? Which role do promises play in this? W
hat moral obligations arise in specific relationships such as friendships\
, romantic relationships or co-parenthood? Which of these might persist ev
