Edgecases is a soundwalk that invites participants to listen
into the layered borderscapes of Basel (acoustic\, electronic\, magnetic\,
radio). Moving through these environments with a specially designed liste
ning system (developed by Tim Shaw)\, participants encounter live sonic ev
ents shaped by infrastructure\, surveillance and human and non-human activ
ity. Edgecases attempts to open up new ways of sensing and understanding b
order spaces beyond what is immediately visible. \;

This research explores how traditional Western maps have shap ed power and inequality in postcolonial Coastal Kenya. It shows that these mapping practices—often seen as neutral or technical—have actually pl ayed a role in continuing colonial legacies by ignoring or erasing Indigen ous ways of understanding space and place. For many local communities\, th is has meant being left out of decisions that affect their land\, culture\ , and future. The study offers a new way of thinking about maps—not just as tools for showing where things are\, but as powerful social and politi cal practices. It introduces cartography as something relational and activ e: a process of working together to create shared understandings of space that reflect lived experiences\, cultural knowledge\, and community values . This perspective is grounded in a decolonial approach that challenges th e dominance of state-driven\, top-down forms of mapping. Working with comm unities in Mida Creek\, Kisiwani Island\, and Lamu\, the research uses cre ative and participatory methods such as counter-mapping\, storytelling\, s ound-based mapping\, drawing on the ground\, and art-based workshops. Thes e methods centre local voices and knowledges—oral\, sensory\, embodied —that are often dismissed by official mapping systems. Together\, these activities help communities reclaim their spatial identities and imagine n ew futures. This research contributes by offering a critical reconceptuali zation of cartography as a relational\, performative\, and decolonial prac tice. It shows how alternative mapping can be a powerful tool for justice\ , solidarity\, and healing—helping people resist historical erasure\, sh are knowledge\, and shape more inclusive and equitable ways of living and governing space.

Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung steht Radio Mikoko+ („mikoko“ bedeutet Mangroven auf Swahili)\, eine multisensorische Installation\, di e über neun Monate (August 2024 - Juni 2025) von den Künstlern David Mui ruri (KE)\, Joseph Kamaru (KE)\, Ann Mbuti (CH/GER) und Yassine Rachidi (C H/MAR) entwickelt wurde. Der Workshop konzentriert sich auf Räume\, in denen sich Fürsorge mit Kontrolle überschneidet - wie z.B. Z ufluchtsorte für Opfer von Menschenhandel\, Gewaltpräventionsprogramme u nd Kinderschutzeinrichtungen - und untersucht\, wie Pflegende und Betreute die Machtdynamik in Fürsorgebeziehungen\, die durch strukturelle Formen des Missbrauchs und der Vernachlässigung geprägt sind\, die in weisser V orherrschaft\, kapitalistischer Enteignung\, Ausbeutung und dem Cisheterop atriarchat verwurzelt sind\, navigieren und ihnen einen Sinn geben. \nAls Reaktion auf die beschleunigten gesellschaftlichen V eränderungen in der Welt hat die Universität Basel das Forum Basiliense gegründet\, eine Plattform für Forschung und Dialog auf interdisziplinä rer Ebene. \;Das Forum Basiliense wurde im vergangenen Jahr mit einem Vortrag der Politikwissenschaftlerin Lea Ypi eröffnet und veranstaltet j ährlich eine Forum Basiliense Lecture. \;Die diesjährige Lecture fin det in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Literaturhaus Basel und dem Theater Basel st att.

Spinoza’s Tractatus Theologico-philosophicus [TTP]\, which some view as the opening shot of the radical political enlightenment\, beg ins with a definition of prophecy and prophets. «Prophecy\,» he argues\, «is a certain knowledge given by God to men». A «Prophet»\, in turn\, is he who receives such certain knowledge and delivers it to those who « cannot themselves» acquire it. \; In this light\, the institution of prophecy is seen as the hallmark of guiding one’s thought by accepting a uthority over our thinking -- of failing the task of enlightenment\, liter ally defined\, by Kant\, as refusing the «guidance of another» and havin g the «courage» to «think for oneself».
\nSpinoza’s account ha s left its footsteps in conservative (Leo Strauss)\, liberal (Michael Walz er)\, and postmarxist (Antonio Negri) political thought until today. Does this Auseinandersetzung between prophecy and enlightenment\, religion and reason\, hold up? Or does enlightenment require thinking prophecy after al l? What is the relation between prophecy and politics? Revolution? We will be focusing on Spinoza›s account of prophecy and\, reading Kant\, its r elation to Enlightenment. Texts include specific locations in Spinoza’s TTP\; Kant›s «What is Enlightenment» and paragraphs in his 3rd Critiqu e\, along with recommended references in Maimonides and Walzer.
